Territory: 9.008 km²
Capital: Mercedes City
State located in the Uruguayan southwest. It is plain with scarce elevations formed partly by the “plenillanura cristalina” (crystalline plain land) and partly for the coast plain. Agriculture and cattle raising are the main economic activities, taking advantage of the fertile floors to cultivate wheat, barley, corn, beet, sunflower and linen. The good grasses of the area allow the breeding of bovine and ovine livestock. Most of the population resides in the proximities of the fluvial ports of the territory.
