History
The origins go back at the end of the XVIIth century when the corner formed by the mouth of the river Daymán in the Uruguay known as Itú; that in the Guarani language means `reef ´ (arrecife).
In the XVIIIth century the Jesuits established there an establishment Jesús’s so-called Position and in 1756 the governor of Montevideo José Joaquín de Viana founded a fortification to lodge to his 400 dragons that were returning from a military campaign in the north of the territory. Later it would grow with local migrations and the proceeding ones from Corrientes, Entre Rios and the Missions.
