so fascinating as peculiar: it has limited services, lacks drinkable water and electrical light. It is a craggy rock of sand and rock, without trees, in that there scatter untid small houses of irregular architecture, surrounded with the intense noise of the scream of the wolves, constant wind and the bravery of the ocean. In spite of his instability, his visit turns out to be captivating.
It is provided with two extensive beaches of thin sand ideal for bath and for the diving. It is excellent fishing
sports during the whole year.
Cemetery of numerous ships sunk in his labyrinthine roquedal, it has caused multiple histories and legends that join the mysterious local delight.
The rocky craggy rock that, sea penetrate, extends in three islands – hearths of marine wolves, serves as base to the lighthouse of 25,6 m that is surrounded by families of wolves that compete for the space and the sun, with the tourists.
The dunes of the Polonio that years behind were more numerous, move and change place as if they had proper life. By presidential decree, in 1966, they were declared a `natural monument´, which has not prevented the irregular construction that commits an outrage against the survival of this marvel.
There does not exist route that allows to gain access in automobile. To come to the End, it is possible to resort to the service of cars thrown by horses, of jeeps or vehicles all area, which they deposit across the way that departs from the kilometer 264 of the route 10. In the route, there is place where to leave the vehicle to objection and guarded. The trip lasts approximately 55 minutes, of trajectory for forest and beach.
The same options offer themselves in the City Barra de Valizas, from where, also, it is possible to be walking along the beach, crossing the dunes.
DUNES: NATURAL MONUMENT
The extensions of La Sierra de Carapé, they reach the maximum height in the Sierra of Rocha, with 332 m. The whole zone is of big panoramic beauty.
Hills and hillocks, they are affected by the erosion and give place to big trenches or cárcavas, very visible in the coastal zone. Also, distributed in discontinuous form for the coast, there appear enormous hills that give to the environment a special appearance. With his cracks and formations crateriformes, they leave to the overdraft the different layers that compose them and, in cases as Saint Isabel de La Pedrera, they allow to throw to demolish the imagination before the appearance of small ovoid formations in his hillsides.
Bordering on the beaches, other one comes from the marvels that do of Rocha an unrepeatable place: the stripe of dunes and dunes, between which one finds the Hill of Buena Vista (Good Sight), the highest of South America. To 50 m high, his top expands a spectacular panorama: the island of Castillo, the beaches, the Cabo Polonio, the Lagoon of Castillos…
In the base of this imposing granitic mass on which the sand is leaned, there is seen a cairn of rustic marble, which supported one of three Frames brought especially from Lisbon, to delimit the empires of Spain and Portugal, from 1750 to 1777. The top part of this Frame, shows itself today in the Fortaleza of Santa Teresa.
The dunes of Cabo Polonio reach up to 30 m high and in spite of having being declared a natural monument, his beauty and fragility are such that, any modification produced in the environment, can make them disappear.
