The department of Rio Negro is geographically located southwest of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay
It is a plain territory, furrowed by “cuchillas” (wavy lands) from the northeast to the southwest.

The vegetable formation of most of the territory is the herbaceous prairie.

The main economic activity is the cattle, especially ovine and in the agriculture: cereals, vine, sunflower and other oleaginous ones prevail.
